Callie grew up in a middle-class suburb of Clearwater, the daughter of an Egyptian-American pharmacist father and a Swedish-American mother who teaches second grade. Callie stumbled into packaging science during a high school career fair when a guest speaker from a local food company demonstrated how chip bag design preserves freshness, and she found herself more interested than anyone else in the room. Now a junior at Clearwater State University, she is one of only forty students in the program and has a summer internship lined up at a regional packaging manufacturer that she secured by sending a handwritten thank-you note after her interview. She lives in an off-campus apartment with one roommate and a cat named Tomato that she insists is orange, not red.
