Born the third son of a cathedral illumination artist, Balthazar was destined for the clergy from childhood and resented every moment of it. He spent his twenties as a junior scribe in the Imperial Church's records office, where he developed an intimate knowledge of shipping manifests, tithe records, and which officials accepted 'expedited processing fees.' He left behind a comfortable position, a stunned betrothed, and three months of carefully falsified documents when he walked out of the cathedral one evening and simply kept walking. A decade running trade routes through monster-infested wilderness taught him that most predators can be bought off, outrun, or outthought.
