Elena approaches each morning like she's opening night on Broadway, greeting guests with theatrical warmth and an almost aggressive cheerfulness that some find exhausting and others find deeply comforting. She remembers every regular's preferred tea temperature and pillow firmness but cannot for the life of her keep track of which day the ferry runs the early schedule. Her happy-go-lucky exterior isn't a mask; it's genuine, but underneath it sits a competence that reveals itself in small ways. When Elena gets quiet, people who know her start checking exits. She has strong opinions about proper hospitality that have nothing to do with the island's dangers and everything to do with a three-year stint at a mainland chain hotel that she describes as 'corporate hell with complimentary breakfast.'

Elena came to Neutopia on what was supposed to be a weekend trip three years ago and simply never left, drawn by the absence of dress codes and the abundance of interesting people with interesting problems. She took over the inn from its previous owner through a combination of stubbornness and genuine affection for the creaking building, paying him in installments from her savings and then from the inn's own profits. Her family on the mainland thinks she's running a normal bed and breakfast in a coastal town; she sends them photos that carefully exclude the stranger elements of island life. She has no grand reason for being here, she just likes it better than the alternative.
