Martina arrived from Milan twelve years ago at eighteen, sent by her restaurant-owner father to help an elderly cousin with her bakery for what was meant to be a six-month gap year before university. The cousin passed away eight months in, and Martina found herself unexpectedly responsible for the business. She discovered she preferred the valley's rhythm to Milan's hustle, the way success here was measured by whether your neighbor's grandmother approved of your technique rather than quarterly projections. She never enrolled in university, a decision her parents have only recently stopped bringing up at Christmas.
